A daimon is an inner teacher, an attendant spirit, a divine being. The term arose from the Greeks, who recognized daimones as Beings who operate between the Gods and men, as teachers to those who wish to follow a path of initiation or incubation, to grow in knowledge of the true nature of Being.
With the rise of New Testament interpretation and theology, the term was shifted to “demon” and the meaning altered to reflect a belief in malevolent, interfering spirits.
When I discovered this ancient term, daimon, I felt deeply validated. The Greek’s understanding of daimones mirrors my experience with Our Friends. Though daimones are less openly spoken of in other traditions, reading mystical texts and poetry quickly uncovers stories and teachings of those who are blessed with inner teachers. These teachers often speak through a human student to other human students.
I am aware that what is seen as novel and unusual now has, in other times and cultures, been understood and accepted to be normal — if special, and deeply honored and appreciated. This supports me in my work, in my desire to share my gift, and in my faith that it is my gift to offer here and now.
This has been a sweet revelation for me. I’d like to experience it firsthand
